Crocheting with Multiple Strands of Yarn
Using multiple strands of yarn in your crochet projects can really set them apart. It’s a technique that’s worth exploring, whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out. The color effects are truly stunning and one-of-a-kind.
Choosing the Right Yarn for Your Crochet Projects
When it comes to crochet projects that hang out near heat sources and/or you use them in the microwave, such as bowl cozies, the choice of yarn is crucial. Cotton yarn is your best bet—it’s heat-resistant, won’t melt, and you can just toss it in the wash. I don’t use the dryer; I prefer to air-dry them.

Just a Few Yarn Notes
- This pattern uses two strands held together. It’s easiest to center pull from two skeins, but it’s possible to use one if you are careful. Be cautious of tangles when pulling from the center and outside.
- I used Lion Brand 24/7, which feels thinner than some other cotton yarns, so be sure to check your gauge, especially if you are using a different yarn.
- If you choose to use a different yarn, holding one strand of yarn instead of holding two can work. For the color work, you could use an ombre or a contrasting color. I have provided a photo of using Sugar and Cream in yellow and beach house ombre so you can get an idea of what that looks like. The blue one is from my yarn stash, so it could be any brand. It’s so pretty!
- Remember to stick with cotton yarn if you plan on using the cozy in the microwave; acrylic could melt.

Yellow bowl cozy is Sugar and Cream yellow and beach house ombre.
The blue cozy is from my stash and of an unknown brand. Both of these were crocheted in a single strand.

Pattern Notes
- Two strands of yarn are held together throughout the entire pattern if you are using Lion Brand 24/7.
- For my cozy, I went with Creamsicle for color A and Aqua for color B. They look great together!
- This pattern is worked in continuous rounds- no need to join at the end of each round. A stitch marker is a lifesaver for keeping track of rounds
- To make color changes easier—especially when holding two strands together—it’s helpful to create a small yarn cake or ball of the contrasting color, approximately 11 yards in length. A yarn winder is handy, but you can roll a ball by hand if you don’t have one.
- To change colors, work to the last 2 loops of the stitch on your hook. Swap out the old color for the new color, and complete the stitch.

The cutest little yarn cake.
Gauge
Round 8 = 4 inches
Finished Measurements
The bottom diameter is 4″, the top diameter is 7″, and its depth is 2.25″
This cozy fits a 6″ soup bowl. Feel free to use it with smaller bowls too, but hold on tight when you’re moving them!
Construction Process
This bowl cozy is designed in a round shape, with the last two rows added for style and function. These rows serve as handy little grips, making it a breeze to transfer from the microwave or counter to the table. They also complete the look of your cozy.

Remember that a stitch marker is a great tool to use! I use one when starting a new round.
Let’s get to it!

Round 9 is done in the BLO with a little twist. If you have
worked in the BLO before you will notice that you get a gap.
I dont like that gap. To combat the gap, work in the back loop
and the back bar also known as the third loop. This photo
shows the back loop and bar I am referring to. Alternatively
you could crochet in the BLO if you dont mind the little gap.

Round 9 BLO for this entire round
