Bonny gift bag

My autumn-themed gift bags are going to be a hit as Thanksgiving party favors! I’m filling them with fall-inspired candies, a soothing lip balm, and a small gift card — thoughtful touches that show appreciation and add charm to the celebration.

Presentation matters when you are giving gifts, and the Bonny Gift Bag has you covered. This adorable, hand-crocheted bag is a nod to modern bohemian flair and endless versatility. It’s perfectly sized to cradle life’s little treasures, from a thoughtful gift card to sweet treats or something shiny and magical. One of my testers dreamed big and kept the magic going by adding more rounds until they had a gift bag tall enough for dressing up a wine bottle!

Choosing colors

Bring the magic of the season to life with holiday-themed gift bags! Choose colors that capture the spirit of each celebration — rich reds and greens for Christmas, cool blues and silvers for a winter wonderland, and warm rusts, browns, and golds for Thanksgiving. Whatever the event, your gift bags will shine with festive charm and handmade warmth.

Choosing the Right Yarn for Your Crochet Projects

Crocheting gift bags is awesome because you can use any yarn you have lying around—no need for anything special! Worsted weight or DK yarn is perfect for a sturdy bag, but don’t hesitate to play around with colors, textures, or even those leftover scraps. It’s all about having fun and crafting something festive, so choose what you love and let your creativity shine!

    Pattern Notes

    • I picked three colors for each pouch and switched them up at rounds 6 and 10. You could use a single yarn color or a variegated yarn, so you don’t need to change colors.
    • Change colors in the second slip stitch of the “sl st in next 2 dc and ch 1 space” by pulling the new color through the last loop on the hook. That’s your color change!
    • The beginning 3 chain counts as a double crochet.

    Gauge

Gauge is not critical to this project. I am providing my gauge for reference.

At completion of the 3rd round – Christmas bag 4 inches, Autumn and blue bag 3.5 inches

    Finished Measurements

The Christmas bag is 6 inches wide by 7 inches tall when laid flat, while the Autumn and blue bags measure 5.5 inches wide by 6 inches tall.

    Construction Process

This gift bag is designed in a round shape, with the last row of edging added for a cute detail. You’ll then crochet a chain for the drawstring. Weave it through the granny clusters and Viola! You have a gift bag!

    Round 6

Keep repeating round 5 until you reach your desired height. My smaller pouches usually stop at Round 11, while the bigger ones go up to Round 14.

Continue to add rounds if you would like your bag to be taller.

    Edging round

*Sl st in next st, sc in next st, (hdc, ch 2, sl st) in next st, rep from * around. Join with sl st.

    ~12 sl, 12 sc, 12 hdc and 12 ch-2

1st dc gets a sl st, 2nd a sc, 3rd gets (hdc, ch2, sl st), continue around.

Using any color or colors you love, create the drawstring.

    Drawstring

    Chain 40, then fasten off.

You could chain more if you want a longer drawstring or fewer for a shorter one.

Weave the drawstring through the second or third round of granny clusters from the top. Add tassels, pom poms, or keep it simple—let your creativity shine!
