Whether you’re an advanced beginner or a seasoned crocheter, this pattern offers a chance to showcase your creative side. As you crochet, feel free to add embellishments like tassels or beads for that extra personal touch.
Choosing colors
Bring the magic of any season to life with holiday-themed gift bags! Choose colors that capture the spirit of each celebration — rich reds and pinks for Valentine’s Day, cool blues and silvers for a winter wonderland, and warm rusts, browns, and golds for Thanksgiving. Whatever the event, your gift bags will shine with festive charm and handmade warmth.
Choosing the Right Yarn for Your Crochet Projects
Crocheting gift bags is awesome because you can use any yarn you have lying around—no need for anything special! Worsted weight or DK yarn is perfect for a sturdy bag, but don’t hesitate to play around with colors, textures, or even those leftover scraps. It’s all about having fun and crafting something festive, so choose what you love and let your creativity shine!

Supplies Needed
- You’ll need about 54 yards of size 4 medium-weight yarn for the smaller bag. Double it for the larger bag. I used Red Heart Bitty Stripes in Pink Lemonade for the two bags. The little basket, aka plant cozy, was crocheted with Red Heart Speckle in Bubblegum while holding two strands of yarn together.
- 5 mm hook for smaller bags, 6 mm for the plant cozy
- A yard of ribbon or lace for a drawstring if preferred over a crocheted chain.
- Scissors, yarn needle, tape measure, stitch markers

Construction Process
This gift bag is designed in a round shape, with the last row of edging added for a cute detail. You’ll then crochet a chain for the drawstring. Weave it through the granny clusters and Viola! You have a gift bag!
Let’s get to it!

Round 2
Sl st in next 2 dc and ch 1 space,- Photo 2. (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in ch 1 space, *ch 1 (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc ) in next ch 1 space, rep from * twice more. ch 1, join with sl st in top of ch 3.

Round 4
Sl st in next 2 dc and ch 1 space, (ch 3, 2 dc) in the ch 1 space, *3 dc in next ch sp, rep from * 10 more times, join with sl st in top of ch 3. ~12 granny clusters
Round 5

~ 12 granny clusters
Round 6
Keep repeating round 5 until you reach your desired height. My smaller pouches stop at Round 11, while the bigger bags go up to round 14. My bag for the bottle repeated round 6 a total of 18 times. I stopped at round 8 for the small basket.
Continue to add rounds if you would like your bag or basket to be taller. Keep in mind, this will increase your yarn yardage.
Once your bag or basket is the size you want, add the edging round.
Edging round
*Sl st in next st, sc in next st, (hdc, ch 2, sl st) in next st, rep from * around. Join with sl st.
~12 sl, 12 sc, 12 hdc and 12 ch-2

1st dc gets a sl st, 2nd a sc, 3rd gets (hdc, ch2, sl st), continue around.
Using any color or colors you love, create the drawstring.
Drawstring
Chain 40, then fasten off. If you’re using ribbon, you don’t need to make a drawstring.
If you’d like a longer drawstring, add more chains; for a shorter one, use fewer chains.
Weave the drawstring or ribbon through the second or third round of granny clusters from the top. Add tassels, pom poms, or keep it simple—let your creativity shine! Remember to add those tassels and pom-poms after weaving in your drawstring; otherwise, it’s tricky to weave with them attached.

I hope you had a blast creating your gift bag or basket! Here’s to spreading love, laughter, and good vibes with every treasure tucked inside—because a little magic is all it takes to spark joy and smiles.
